Important quotes:
"This girl was everything in life that I wasn't. She was smart, articulate, outgoing, and popular. She came from the best of families and never wore the same clothes two days in a row. ...She made me sick" (120).
- This quote is showing how insecure Augusten really was, by comparing himself to this girl who appeared to have everything going for her. This adds to the fact that Augusten really did come from a messed up family where he didn't have what ever he wanted or went to school al of the time. This also shows Augusten's want to be normal, that he could never have.
- Augusten has lived his whole live without anyone telling him what to do, but as he gets older he doesn't know what to do. He has a bunch of influences on him and none of them are what he wants to be. Natalie tells him to do what ever he wants to do, which leads him to dropping out of high school and laying around the house. While none of his parent, Dr. Finch, Angus, Deidre, tell him what to do. He lives a life with no rules. In this quote he is blaming everyone for not telling giving him rules and telling him what to do.
- Throughout the novel Augusten and Natalie are always getting in trouble or scheming up a plan to do something. This quote suggests that they actually try to benefit from what they do this time. That they chase their future to become what they have always wanted to be, normal.
