Deidre Burroughs is Augusten's mother. There must have been lots of psychological damage done in her earlier years to have really set her mind to the point where she can't even take that much real care of her kid. She struggles with a violent husband at the begging of the memoir and then throughout the novel it is discovered that she is a lesbian. She is irresponsible and highly open to experiences whether they be positive or negative. She's just living in her own world.
