Augusten Burroughs had a very hard and strange childhood. He experienced things most children at the age don't regularly experience in their normal lives. The stress and just way of living must had an ever lasting effect on him. For a child to go through something like that at that specific age would scar that child and obvious problems and patterns would probably appear in the future. As regards to how he turned out, this memoir says it all.
